Sectional Preview: 10/03/08
How did we do in our pre-season ratings?
It's almost sectional time and the soccer season will soon be coming to a close for some, later for others...but, how did we do in our pre-season picks: (very good actually)
(Here's the order we had)
1) Memorial: We were right on in putting them first, have been there all year. (this could change with the showdown for Reitz on Tuesday..winner takes City/SIAC Title...again)
2) Reitz: Again, great team that is right there with Memorial as we predicted...lost good player in E. Carpenter (transfer to North), but they are still loaded and could go deep in PS.
3) Mater Dei: Came up a little short in our prediction, not as good as last year's team, but still very good, and they will be ready for post-season.
4) Harrison: Again, not as solid as we predicted, but close and could act as a spoiler in the ps.
5) Bosse: Predicted them to surprise some people and we believe they have. Stronger than most thought....could still make noise in the PS.
6) North: About where we expected them to be.
7) Castle: Started off strong until running into Reitz/Mem/MD in losing 3 straight..we still say lookout for them, but they are probably one year away.
8) Central: Right on target...Rebuilding!

Soccer Blast Off...
Saturday 8/16/08
It's hard to believe high school soccer season is already here, I mean here...teams from Evansville went at it Saturday for two twenty minute scrimmages each. So, how did they look? Guess it all depends on who you ask, so I'll give my opinion on what to look for in the upcoming season.
How Diva la Soccer ranks 'em:
1) Memorial: 12-4-3 in 2007. Angie Lensing/Head CoachCity/SIAC Co-Champs. Can you say reload! With losing so much talent, one would think Memorial would be off just one year....won't happen. Add a group of talented seniors with some newcomers and 'theirrrrr back'. Don't know where 'all' these players come from, but they 'all' know how to play the game. In my opinion, they looked a little better than Reitz on Saturday night, but then again, it was only a Jamboree and the score was 0-0.. Put Seniors Oliva Robinson, Celia Pauli, Susan Ellsperman anywhere on the field, plus Junior, Haley Meyer at wing, and they spell dangerous. They have added some newcomers that looked very solid, so here we go again. Lauren Lamb, Ashley Short, and Brittany Mccall can also play good soccer. Look for a lot of center attacking with a rock solid defense.
#2) Reitz: Head Coach/Jeremy Wolfe. I'm not going to saddle Reitz with #1 again, but a 16-1-1 2007 record, City/SIAC co-champs with only losing one starter (rachel johan- all city) makes this a great team. Experience is the key, with 16 of their 18 players all having earned varsity letters over the past two years. Talent, well that too, combine First Team All City/All SIAC/ All Regional players Stephanie Thompson and Makenzie Wallace with players like 4 year starters Stephanie Owens, Kelsey Schmitt and leading scorer Carlee Ferhribach and that's just where the talent starts...(Thompson could be the best player in the city and will draw double and even triple teaming at times, and she did) ...fellow juniors, Erica Carpenter and Taylor Adkins (hurt most of last year) are good with the ball, and can stick the ball into the back of the net. Johan was a big defensive loss, but add seniors, and three year letter winners, Brooke Southwell and Sarah Gott on defense along with JV defensive player of the year, Mary Arnold, and newcomer sophomore Haley Craig, and Reitz should be rock solid on defense. Other players to watch: Paige Bernhart in the middle is tough; Nicole Yurks can flatout run on the outside, and Kayla Schneider, last years JV offensive player of the year, can bump with the best of 'em. Add Senior Sidney Pease for extra offense and Reitz spells 'dangerous'. NET: Two very well tested keepers, Ariana Weare is just a sophomore but started all last year registering 11 shutouts: Co-Keeper, Junior Emily Karns was the JV Keeper her Freshman year on a 11-1 Reitz JV team that allowed just 4 goals all year (she saw some varsity action last year). Both are tall (5'8") and athletic. This team could be the most talented Reitz team that coach Jeremy Wolfe has ever had, but that's why we play the game..they will be firmly tested their first 2 games as they play #1, Ind. Cathedral and #2, Carmel...back to back in South Bend this weekend, I wish I could be there!.
3) Mater Dei: 16-4-2 2007. Head Coach: Rob Schoenstein. Mater Dei, like Reitz, was young last year so they have a truck load of talent back. They assemble a very solid junor class that has great experience and skill. Upsetting favorite Reitz in the Sectional, Mater Dei went on to win both the sectional and regional titles before falling in the Semi-State. They lost their leading scorer in Kelsey Hoffman, but back are three year starters, and 2nd Team All-City Players, Jennifer Atherton (in the goal), and Meghan Schneider (D)...and leadership is also strong with 4 year starter and All-City Sarah Sweeney leading the charge at Sweeper. The Lannert sisters are also back, TJ and Hadley! Mater Dei uses subs in mass rotation (some people have questioned this mass exit/entry approach, but hey, they had fresh legs last year when it counted most - Reitz did not! The westside has never had so much talent and I can't wait to see them battle this year as Reitz must still be feeling the sectional sting! The lost of Hoffman's scoring is a ?, but they'll be there. Just to mention a few, Kara Kuester, Chelsea Emmert, Danielle Downing, Kasey Polk, Brooke Nurrenbern and Jessica Wilson all play a physical game of soccer.
4) Harrison: 13-7-1 in 2007. Head Coach: Scott Henderson. Beat Memorial in route to Sectional Title. Very talented team even with the loss of Lavonia Lewis who is now at USI. Played a lot of freshman and sophomores last year and they looked very good at the Jamboree. All-City Shelly Moll leads the team in just about everything, and her fellow junior and outside threat, Kayla Woodruff, will make life tough for defenders all year long. Experience in the goal with Senior Kelsey Dempsey, and Kaitlin Carneal and Abby Anderson lead a talented sophomore class that makes this team very good, will compete every game out.
5) Bosse: 11-7-2 in 2007. Head Coach: Eric Schoenstein. Meagan Kempf has moved on to help USI, enough said! Good speed up front and solid defense should alllow them to win some tight games. Looked good against Central and are well coached, could surprise a few people. Nicole Golic provides experience in the middle while Juniors, Molly Groves and Rachel Bradford shore up the defense. Ashley Morehead should replace some of Kempfs scoring punch.
6) North: 10-6-1 in 2007. Head Coach: Scott Wannemuehler. Lost best player, Mackenzie Brinker, to a pre-season injury, out all year....going to make it a long year for North, but they looked fairly strong at the Jamboree (and they do have some players back, so the team could rally for some key wins and surprise some people by sectional time.
7) Castle: 4-12-1 in 2007. Head Coach: Joe Lattner. Young, very young! But as we all know, young can be sometimes be an advantage in sports, so given some time, this group is going to be very good. But, not this year, at least not strong enough to take any crowns, but look out for Castle over the next two and three years....they are loaded with young talent with Sophomores Ashley Hampton, Brittney Baker, and Amy Mattingly just to mention a few, plus a great freshman class! But it will be up to their Seniors, Meghan Williams, Aly Stuard and Allison Lattner if they are going to prove me wrong and win this year. Much improved!
8) Central: 7-8-3 in 2007. Head Coach: Damon Brown. I hate to do it, but they lost Young and Sosh, both very strong players and leaders, so rebuilding looks in the cards for Central this year. Well coached, so they could pull a few upsets. Appeared to me to have better overall team balance than last year, but hard to replace Young and Sosh.
